Collagen is commercially available and is injected into lines, depressions, scars and lips to achieve a desired result. It reduces the appearance of wrinkles and enhances the lips by an injection technique. A skin test must be performed first about one month prior to treatment to make sure that you are not allergic to the collagen material. Collagen is reabsorbed by the body after three to five months.
Several new dermal fillers previously only available in Europe are now available in the United States, including Juvederm® and Restylane®. These new substances are organic polymers which are generally associated with fewer side effects and remain longer before being reabsorbed, sometimes up to one year.
