We receive requests for fuller, more luscious lips almost every day. Plastic surgeons achieve lip enhancement by "plumping" the lips with various materials. Over the past ten years, a multitude of products have come to market and vanished just as quickly. The time-tested techniques of autologous fat grafting and collagen are still the top two methods of choice at Plastic Surgery Arts of New Jersey.
Autologous fat grafting simply means that we harvest your own fatty tissue, cleanse it, and reinject it into the lips in such a way as to plump and sculpt for the desired result. Because we use your own tissue, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reactions. The only disadvantage is that some of the fat is eventually resorbed over a period of many months, diminishing the overall result.
Collagen, on the other hand, is commercially available and painlessly injected into the lips to achieve lip enhancement. A skin test must first be performed about one month prior to treatment to make sure that the patient has no allergy to the collagen material. Collagen, too, is resorbed by the body after three to five months.
Fortunately, several new products long available in Europe are now available in America. These new substances are organic polymers which are generally associated with fewer side effects and remain longer, sometimes up to one year, before resorption. Two effective and popular lip-plumping injectables are Juvederm® and Restylane®.
