Will my plastic surgery be covered by health insurance?
Insurance providers typically follow the definitions given by the AMA (American Medical Association) and the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) which divide plastic surgery into two categories, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. According to ASPS, "Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem." These types of procedures are usually not covered by health insurance. Alternatively, "Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve functions, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance." Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by insurance, but levels of coverage varies widely. As with all medical procedures and services, we recommend that you consult with your insurance company directly.
Can I use my HSA or FSA for plastic surgery?
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and health savings account (HSA) can typically be used for reconstructive surgery, but not cosmetic surgery as explained in the question above. You should consult with your benefits administrator or tax professional to determine eligibly.
